This is my representation of Piet Mondrian’s Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Grey and Blue.

If you look closely at the original, you can see the brush strokes, the hand-drawn lines, and the slight unevenness of the solid layers of color. This always added to my enjoyment of this art.

I didn’t want to to do a straight mosaic. I decided to do greebling instead to capture that texture.

The greebling created gaps and holes with the pieces that show through to the background color. To keep the “illusion”, I made the plates behind the greebling the same colors as the greebling. That means there is a 2nd complete copy of the art behind the texture in solid plates.

I have tried to figure out what to add to this to make it a more engaging piece such as a minifig of Piet Mondrian but most people would not recognize who he is. Or hidden, swinging panels or details, but the piece stands so much on it’s own that there really is not much to add. However, I finally came up with an idea that I hope to implement soon. Look for this piece to be displayed at future shows with what I hope will be a “fun” addition.

Common questions and answers:

Do you hang this on your wall at home?
Yes. This is made with the LEGO art plates and LEGO hangers which make it very easy to hang on the wall and there is nowhere else I would want to keep it.

Are any of the same pieces used next to each other?
If so, it is completely unintentional. I wanted to make every piece unique with respect to the pieces around it. Unfortunately during in my constant changing of it and in it’s travels to different shows, occasionally some of the pieces have fallen off and in putting them back, I may have placed them “incorrectly”. Please let me know if you see any of these (in person, the images are all older and don’t reflect the current state)
